Story 10: The Future We Built – The Hopeful Futures
Today, the final story: a twenty-year-old in 2100 inheriting a transformed but thriving world.
Your great-great-granddaughter is twenty years old in 2100.
She has never known a stable climate in the historical sense, but she has known a society that responded to change with competence and care.
She wakes in her university accommodation in Cambridge, a building that would have seemed impossible to the architects of the early 21st century. The walls are living systems, filtering air and moderating temperature. The roof is a meadow, contributing to the campus ecosystem that supports pollinator populations across the region. The energy comes from sources so clean and abundant that rationing them seems as strange to her as rationing sunlight.
She studies ecological restoration and climate-resilient design, because that is what her generation does. Not out of desperation, but out of fascination. Her professors include some of the pioneers who led the transformation of the 2020s and 2030s, now elderly but still teaching, still contributing, still amazed at what their choices made possible.
Today, she has a field trip to the Thames Estuary. She takes the train through a landscape that tells the story of the century. London, visible through the window, is green in a way that Victorian Londoners would not recognise.
The buildings are draped with vegetation. The streets are lined with trees. The Thames itself is teeming with life that had not existed there for generations.
Parts of southeast England required managed retreat. The Thames Barrier, upgraded and enhanced multiple times since her great-grandmother was young, operates regularly but effectively.
Hull, Boston, and Portsmouth invested heavily in integrated coastal protection systems combining hard engineering with nature-based solutions. Some areas were indeed abandoned, but through planned processes that protected community cohesion and compensated residents fairly.
Sea levels rose approximately 60-80cm by 2100 (rather than 1-2 metres under high-emissions scenarios), a significant challenge but one that was anticipated and managed through six decades of consistent investment in coastal adaptation.
The estuary has been transformed. Where there were once industrial wastelands and flood-prone housing, there are now salt marshes and wetlands teeming with wildlife. The oyster beds have been restored, filtering the water to a clarity not seen for centuries. Seals and porpoises have returned. The fishing communities that nearly died in the 2030s have been reborn, harvesting sustainably from waters that have had time to recover.
Her professor gathers the students at a viewpoint overlooking the estuary. He is old now, part of the generation that made the crucial decisions. He tells them about the debates of his youth, the resistance, the breakthroughs, the moments when it seemed everything would fail.
“We nearly did not make it,” he says. “There were years when I thought we had left it too late. But we kept going. And here we are.”
She studies ecological restoration and climate-resilient design at the university, because that is what her generation does. They do not study desperate adaptation to catastrophe. They study how to enhance and restore whilst maintaining human wellbeing. They study how to build resilience into every system. They study how past decisions created the foundation for thriving, not merely surviving.
The Reality: Under net zero by 2050, achieved globally through unprecedented international cooperation catalysed by UK leadership, warming is limited to approximately 1.6-1.8°C above pre-industrial levels.
Sea level rise continues but at dramatically reduced rates. Ecosystem damage is significant but manageable. Approximately 2 million cumulative life years gained in England and Wales by 2050 alone, with benefits accelerating through the century.
The transformation created millions of green jobs, reduced health inequality, revitalised communities, and positioned the UK as a global leader in climate solutions.

She knows her family’s history. The boy is racing through green corridors in 2035. The grandmother who moved with dignity in 2043. The abundant harvests of 2058. The protected elders of 2075.
Her great-grandmother, your granddaughter from the story: 2075 The City that could not cope, is still alive. Ninety-two years old and sharp as ever, living in the same regenerative heartland where she worked as a young woman. They video call every week, and the old woman tells stories that the young one records for posterity. The story of the transformation. The story of choices made when choices still mattered.
She knows these outcomes were not inevitable. She knows that in the early 21st century, there was enormous resistance to the changes required. Those powerful interests fought the transition. That there were setbacks and compromises and imperfect solutions.
But she also knows this: courage prevailed. Not perfectly. Not without cost. But decisively enough to prevent catastrophe.
That afternoon, she works on her dissertation in the university library. Her subject is the transition itself: how societies change, what makes transformation possible, why some generations rise to their challenges, and others do not. She is building on decades of scholarship, but she is also writing from a position of gratitude.
The view from the library window shows the city as it is now: green, thriving, adapted. And beyond it, on the horizon, the wind turbines and solar arrays that power this whole region. The infrastructure that looked so fragile when it was being built. The systems that now seem as permanent as the rivers and hills.

She looks at photographs of the England her ancestors knew and feels something her generation rarely experiences: continuity. The England she inhabits is recognisable to them. Transformed, yes. Adapted, absolutely. But still green, still temperate, still capable of supporting flourishing communities and abundant ecosystems.
She looks at those photographs, and she feels something that her generation has learned to embrace without reservation: gratitude. Gratitude to the people who acted when action was difficult. Gratitude to the people who chose courage over comfort. Gratitude to the people who protected her right to a liveable future over their convenience and quarterly earnings.
She knows their names. History has been generous to them. It should be.
That evening, she walks along the river with friends. The sunset paints the sky in colours that her great-grandmother says are more vivid than they used to be, a consequence of the cleaner air. They talk about their futures, their plans, the world they will help build.
None of them feels despair. None of them feels rage at the generations that came before. They feel challenged, yes, because there is still work to do. But they also feel equipped, supported, and hopeful.
They inherited a world worth inheriting. That is the gift the generation of the 2020s gave them.

Over the last ten weeks, I have shared ten stories about the same five people:

- These five people across five generations are not hypothetical. They are not worst-case scenarios we can dismiss as unlikely. They are the people we are choosing to harm, right now, through our collective inaction. Every tonne of carbon dioxide we fail to eliminate, every climate policy we weaken, every quarter we prioritise short-term profit over long-term survival, we are writing their stories for them. We are deciding that a ten-year-old boy will cry from heat exhaustion. We are deciding that an eighteen-year-old girl will watch her grandmother lose everything. We are deciding that a seventy-year-old woman will die alone in an overheated flat.
What We Know: As sustainability professionals, we must communicate this reality with unflinching honesty. The science is clear, the projections are robust, and the human cost is calculable: Heat-related deaths will increase by 6 to 53 times by the 2050s to 2070s, depending on our mitigation and adaptation efforts - Nearly 200,000 homes will need to be abandoned to coastal change by mid-century
- Agricultural droughts will intensify by up to 74%, threatening food security
- 8 million properties will face regular flood risk by 2050
- Vulnerable populations will bear the greatest burden of every single impact
- But we also know this: these projections assume choices we have not yet made.
- They assume levels of warming we can still prevent. They assume adaptation failures we can still avoid
- What We Can Still Do: The UK has committed to net zero by 2050. We have the Climate Change Act, the Climate Change Committee, and increasingly ambitious sectoral targets. We have renewable energy capacity growing faster than almost any nation on Earth. We phased out coal power in 2024. We reduced emissions by 50% against 1990 levels ahead of schedule.
- But we are not doing enough, not moving fast enough, not protecting vulnerable people with the urgency their dignity and survival demand.
Every sustainability report we write, every carbon reduction plan we implement, every board we present to, we must centre these human stories. Not because climate change is primarily a moral issue, though it is. Not because vulnerable people deserve our sympathy, though they do. But because these are the stakes. These are the lives. This is what we are fighting for.
The Question They Will Ask: The son in 2035, the daughter in 2043, the granddaughter in 2058, the great-granddaughter in 2075, the great-great-granddaughter in 2100. They are asking us, right now, what we chose, what we prioritised. Whether we understood what we were doing to them. Whether we cared enough to stop
Let us make sure we have an answer they can live with. Because they will have to live with whatever we decide. Or die from it. Those are the only two options we have left for them
